Welcome to Restorative Responses

We design, deliver and evaluate restorative responses in health, disability and social care settings. Our collaborative team holds expertise in co-design, organisational and community development, restorative justice and practices, research and evaluation, system safety, Human Factors, lived experience and mātauranga Māori.

Based in New Zealand, we work globally, and provide support to government agencies, public and private providers, communities, clinicians, unions, advocates and researchers.

What is a restorative response?

Human relationships are at the core of the human experience of the world, are fundamental to human wellbeing, and are implicated in our healing.  In the complex health system environment, restorative responses account for complex relational dynamics between institutional policies and practices and the people providing or receiving care.  A restorative approach is collaborative, incorporates multiple voices and evidence-based tools, and can enhance health system safety when all is well and mitigate the risk of compounded harm when things go wrong.

Restorative principles and values can be enacted in legislation and policy, operating procedures, conversations or affective statements that foster human dignity, equality, freedom, mutual respect, informed consent and collaborative governance. In everyday work, restorative practices foster connection, co-production and responsibility for oneself, others and community.

When healthcare harm emerges from conflict, complaints or incidents, restorative responses can account for the potentially traumatising nature of the experience. A restorative response is underpinned by restorative justice principles that support and involve directly affected individuals, surface impacts and needs, clarify obligations and agree a way forward. Doing so can restore wellbeing, dignity and trust when combined with evidence-based models that support affected institutions or professions to learn, transform health system safety and discharge legal obligations.

In colonised countries, restorative responses can account for intergenerational harms. In Aotearoa, NZ our work is underpinned by Pae Ora, the partnership approach expected between tangata whenua (people of the land) and tangata Tiriti (people of the Treaty of Waitangi), and He maungarongo ki nga iwi: Envisioning a restorative health system in Aotearoa New Zealand.
